EUREKA, Ill. -- Cleveland Indians relief pitcher and Chillicothe, Ill. native Zach McAllister visited the campus of Eureka College Thursday afternoon to meet with new Eureka head coach Jerry Rashid and address more than three dozen EC baseball student-athletes.
McAllister spoke to the Red Devils and took questions for 40 minutes in the Hall of Fame Room inside the Reagan Athletic Complex. He reflected on his player-coach relationship with Rashid, his personal journey from high-school draft pick to Major League Baseball and his daily regimen throughout the year as a seven-year veteran of the Indians.
Rashid mentored McAllister for two seasons as head coach at Illinois Valley Central High School in Chillicothe. Their partnership culminated with a 40-win season and the IHSA class A state title in 2006. Including McAllister, six of Rashid's former student-athletes at IVC went on to be selected in the MLB Draft. Rashid coached Drasen Johnson (2015 Rockies), Jordan Parr (2012 Dodgers, 2013 Diamondbacks), Josh Parr (2011 Diamondbacks), Justin Parr (2013 Phillies) and Chris Razo (2013 Brewers) prior to their collegiate and/or professional careers.
The Red Devils are tentatively scheduled to begin the season Sunday, March 4 against Elmhurst in Jacksonville, Ill.
