Spalding Pulls Away Late to Defeat Eureka in Series Finale
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Eureka baseball team dropped its series finale at Spalding on Saturday, falling 11-1 in seven innings.
After a scoreless opening frame, Spalding broke through in the bottom of the second inning, plating a run to take an early 1-0 lead.
Eureka answered in the top of the third. With two outs, Andrew Zimmerman (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) delivered a single before Noah Company (Le Roy, Ill./Le Roy) followed with a triple to bring Zimmerman home and even the score at 1-1.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as Spalding responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run to regain the lead at 2-1. The hosts added to their advantage with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth, extending the lead to 6-1.
Spalding sealed the game in the seventh inning, scoring five runs to end the contest via the run rule, 11-1.
Zimmerman led the way offensively for Eureka, going 2-for-3 and scoring the team's lone run. Company finished 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Josh Frenden (New Port Richey, Fla./River Ridge), Camden Smith (Florence, Ala./Florence), and Gabe Peters (Washington, Ill./Washington Community) each added a hit.
On the mound, Brayden Williams (Kansas, Okla./Salina) made the start, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing six runs, one earned, on seven hits and three walks. Trevor Kinder (West Plains, Mo./West Plains) worked a scoreless sixth inning and recorded one strikeout.
