Red Devils Fall to Lyon in Series Finale
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka baseball team closed out its series against Lyon with a 12-1 loss on Saturday, as the Scots used an early offensive surge to secure the victory in seven innings.
Lyon wasted no time at the plate, plating four runs in the first inning before adding two more in the second and four in the third. The visitors tacked on another run in the fourth to build an 11-0 advantage through four innings.
Eureka threatened in the bottom of the third when Montrez West (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and Dewrell Wesley (Mountain View, Calif./Los Altos) each reached base, but the rally was cut short as West was picked off to end the inning.
The Red Devils broke through in the fifth. Jackson Slater (Huntsville, Texas/Huntsville) led off the inning with a single and later came around to score on a base hit by West, trimming the deficit to 11-1. Noah Company (Le Roy, Ill./Le Roy) followed with a walk and Wesley singled to load the bases with one out, but Lyon escaped the jam to keep Eureka from adding on.
Lyon pushed its lead to 12-1 with a run in the top of the seventh before Eureka mounted one final attempt in the bottom half. Slater opened the inning with a base hit, but the Red Devils were unable to extend the game as it ended by run rule.
Slater led Eureka offensively, going 2-for-3 and scoring the team's lone run. Grant Hackney (Morton, Ill./Morton) added a double as part of a 1-for-3 performance, while West finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Wesley and Griffin Klein (Bowie, Md./Bowie) also recorded hits for the Red Devils.
Connor Metz (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) made the start on the mound for Eureka, working 2.0 innings and allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out two. Jake Steele (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) provided 4.0 innings of relief, surrendering two runs on five hits and striking out three.
