EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Grinnell on Sunday, as the Pioneers converted two late penalty kicks to come from behind and defeat the Red Devils.
Eureka had an early opportunity to take the lead in the 7th minute when Walter Medrano's (Houston, Texas/Heights) header rattled the left post and stayed out of the net. Red Devils goalkeeper Xavier Brisbon (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) was crucial in keeping the game scoreless, making seven saves in the first half to keep Grinnell off the board. Despite several other scoring chances, the teams entered halftime locked at 0-0.
The Red Devils broke the deadlock early in the second half when Gabriel Gonzalez (Oak Forest, Ill./Homeschooled) curled a brilliant free kick into the top corner from just outside the 18-yard box in the 51st minute, giving Eureka a 1-0 lead. However, Grinnell responded with sustained pressure and earned two penalty kicks in the 75th and 81st minutes, both converted by Oliver Northing. The controversial penalty calls shifted the momentum in Grinnell's favor, allowing them to take a 2-1 lead.
Eureka pushed hard to find an equalizer, with shots from Tristan Martinez (Flowery Branch, Ga./Cherokee Bluff) and Landon Porch (Metamora, Ill./Metamora), but neither could find the back of the net. Despite a late offensive surge, the Red Devils were unable to overcome Grinnell's late goals, and the match ended with the Pioneers securing a 2-1 win.
Brisbon was a standout in goal, recording seven saves to keep Eureka in the match. Gonzalez's free kick goal was the team's only offensive breakthrough, while Porch led the team with three shot attempts, one of which was on target.
