GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Eureka men's soccer team battled but couldn't overcome an early deficit on the road Wednesday night, falling 2-0 to Greenville.
The Panthers capitalized early, scoring in the 15th minute before doubling their advantage in the 24th minute on an unfortunate deflection that found its way into the net.
Despite the early setbacks, the Red Devils continued to battle. Just before halftime, Eureka nearly cut the deficit in half when a back pass from Greenville slipped under the goalkeeper's foot and rolled toward goal, but he was able to recover in time to clear the ball off the line and send the Red Devils into halftime trailing 2-0.
In the second half, James Williams (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnet) came within inches of scoring in the 62nd minute when his shot from close range was denied by the crossbar and bounced back into the box before the Panthers defense cleared the danger.
Goalkeeper Xavier Brisbon (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) anchored the defense with seven saves while facing 21 total shots. Tristan Martinez (Flowery Branch, Ga./Cherokee Bluff) led the Red Devils with two of the team's six shots, including one on goal.
