Red Devils Post PRs and Another School Record at Monmouth
MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Eureka cross country and distance team competed Saturday at the Roger Haynes Invitational hosted by Monmouth, turning in multiple personal bests and another record-breaking performance in a competitive meet.
Though smaller in size, the meet featured strong competition and provided a quality tune-up as the Red Devils near the championship portion of the indoor season.
The women opened the day in the mile, where Zoe Stoecker (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) delivered a consistent effort. Stoecker crossed in 7:38.00, just a few seconds off her personal record from last week. Continuing her return to racing, she has shown steady progress and maintained strong form in back-to-back meets.
On the men's side, Cole Glover (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) led the way in the mile with a 4:46.14 performance, finishing sixth overall and improving by more than a second from last week. Jose Amador (Kempton, Ill./Tri-Point) opened aggressively through his first 400 meters before finishing in 5:26.54, while Evan Gillespie (Jacksonville, Ill./Jacksonville) used a quick early pace to carry him to a 6:25.52 finish, narrowly missing his personal best.
Glover and Amador returned later in the meet for the 800 meters and continued their upward trend. Glover cut more than three seconds from his previous best, clocking a collegiate personal-best 2:06.48. Amador regained his trademark finishing kick and shaved more than a second off last week's season-best time, finishing in 2:16.33.
The meet concluded with another record-setting effort from Bailey Webster (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) in the 3,000 meters. Webster broke his own school record for the third consecutive week, crossing in 9:09.19 to finish second overall and move to No. 2 in the SLIAC this season. He lowered his previous record by more than seven seconds and has now set or broken a school record in five consecutive races over the past three weeks. Webster showcased remarkable consistency, opening with his slowest split of 37.43 seconds and stayed in the 36-37 second range for 13 laps before closing in 33.90 to secure a runner-up finish.
Head coach Chris Robinson praised the team's collective effort.
"Overall this was a strong meet for the team," Robinson said. "I was thrilled to see consistent times from Zoe and Evan, the steady improvement from Cole, the competitive fire in Jose, and Bailey continuing to not be satisfied with his previous results. We have a shorter week ahead with a Friday night meet at Illinois College. This will serve as our final tune up before the SLIAC Indoor Championship at Principia on Feb. 28."
