EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka volleyball team lost in three sets to Lyon and four sets to Westminster on Saturday.
GAME 1 vs. Lyon
The Red Devils fell to the Scots in three sets, with scores of 17-25, 25-17, and 22-25.
Eureka started strong in the first set, taking a 10-4 lead. However, Lyon rallied, scoring 12 of the next 14 points to take a 16-12 lead in the set. They ultimately won the set 25-17. The Red Devils again jumped out to an early lead in the second set and even came within a point of winning. Yet, the Scots fought back once more, taking the set 27-25. Eureka kept the final set close throughout but ultimately lost 25-22.
Brooklyn Shell (Evansville, Ind./Mount Vernon) had another strong showing for Eureka, recording 8 kills and 7 digs. Chelsea Beck (Clay City, Ill./Clay City) led the Red Devils with 9 assists, while Alyssa Company (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln Community) contributed 8 digs, 2 service aces, and 2 blocks.
GAME 2 vs. Westminster
Eureka dropped the second match of the day to Westminster, with set scores of 24-26, 11-25, 25-22, and 22-25.
In the first set, Eureka never led but pulled the score close at 25-24. Unfortunately, they were unable to complete the late comeback, losing the set 26-24. The Red Devils led early in the second set but struggled down the stretch, getting outscored 18-4 over the final 22 points of the set. Once again, Eureka jumped out to an early lead in the third set, and this time they held on to win 25-22. However, they were unable to force a fifth set, dropping the fourth set 25-22.
Hallee Gauna (Arcola, Ill./Arcola) and Alyssa Company tied for the team lead with 15 kills each. Claire Schaffner (Delavan, Ill./Delavan) led Eureka with 16 assists, while Chelsea Beck added 14 assists. Brooklyn Shell led the Red Devils with 18 digs.
