Volleyball Drops Both Matches in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Eureka volleyball team lost both of its matches on Saturday morning, falling to Spalding in three sets and to Blackburn in four sets.

GAME 1 vs. Spalding

In the first game of the day, Eureka fell to Spalding in straight sets, with set scores of 23-25, 17-25, and 16-25. 

The Red Devils battled hard in the first set, rallying to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 24-23, but they could not get the point they needed to even the score and ultimately lost the set. Spalding came out strong in the second set, winning 25-17. In the final set, Spalding jumped out to an 8-2 lead, which proved too much for Eureka to overcome, resulting in a defeat in straight sets. 

Alyssa Company (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln Community) led the Red Devils with 14 kills, adding 2 services aces and 7 digs. Claire Schaffner (Delavan, Ill./Delavan) contributed 15 assists, while Brooklyn Shell (Evansville, Ind./Mount Vernon) led the team with 9 digs.

GAME 2 vs. Blackburn

The Red Devils put up more of a fight in their second match but fell to Blackburn in four sets, with set scores of 21-25, 21-25, 25-22, and 19-25. 

In the first set, the Red Devils managed to take an 18-17 lead, but four straight points by the Beavers allowed them to take control, and Blackburn won 25-21. The second set mirrored the first, with Blackburn leading throughout to secure another 25-21 victory. Eureka fought back in the third set, battling until the final point, when Alyssa Company delivered a kill to clinch a 25-22 win for the Red Devils. However, the Beavers regrouped in the fourth set, taking it 25-19 to secure the match. 

Alyssa Company once again led the way for the Red Devils in the second match, achieving a career-high of 25 kills, along with 13 digs and 3 blocks. Brooklyn Shell also had a strong showing for Eureka with 16 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Claire Schaffner once again led the Red Devils with. 22 assists. 

UP NEXT

The Red Devils will head to Galesburg on Thursday, Oct. 24, for their final non-conference matchup of the season against Knox. The game is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
