EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka volleyball team hosted Lyon and Spalding in their home finale on Saturday, falling in both matches.
GAME 1 vs. Lyon
In the first match of the day, Eureka lost to Lyon in straight sets, with scores of 27-29, 24-26, and 22-25.
After falling behind 19-12 in the first set, the Red Devils mounted a comeback and came within one point of winning the opening set on three occasions, but they were unable to secure the final point, allowing Lyon to win 29-27. Eureka fought hard again in the second set, but the Scots edged them out in another tight contest, winning 26-24. The Red Devils started the final set strong, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and forcing a Lyon timeout. However, the Scots emerged from the timeout with renewed energy and came back to win the set 25-22, clinching the match.
Cloee O'Donoghue (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Embden) led the Red Devils with 14 digs. Alyssa Company (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln Community) delivered another standout performance, recording 13 kills and 13 digs. Claire Schaffner (Delavan, Ill./Delavan) contributed 19 assists, while Hallee Gauna (Arcola, Ill./Arcola) added 3 solo blocks and 8 kills.
GAME 2 vs. Spalding
The Red Devils struggled to bounce back in their second match of the day, losing to Spalding in straight sets: 22-25, 20-25, and 19-25.
Eureka started the opening set strong, taking a 12-9 lead, but the Golden Eagles found their rhythm and ultimately took the set 25-22, despite Eureka's quick start. In the second set, the Red Devils remained competitive but could not build a significant lead, as Spalding finished strong to win 25-20. In the final set, Spalding maintained control for most of the match, winning 25-19 to secure the victory.
Claire Schaffner led the Red Devils in the second game with 15 assists and 13 digs. Hallee Gauna recorded 4 solo blocks, while Alyssa Company added 3 solo blocks. Gauna also led the team with 8 kills in the match.
