EUREKA, Ill. – The Red Devils were unable to generate any momentum in their Homecoming matchup on Saturday night, falling 56-0 to Benedictine at McKinzie Field.
Benedictine (5-1, 3-1 NACC) struck early and never looked back. Dino Stephens powered the Eagles' offense, rushing for 210 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. His 5-yard touchdown run on the opening drive put the visitors ahead 8-0, and a 33-yard touchdown pass from Philip Jacobs to Alex Siebens extended the lead to 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.
Stephens added two more short rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, giving Benedictine a 28-0 halftime lead. The Eagles continued to pile on in the second half, highlighted by an 80-yard punt return touchdown from Santino Florio. The Eagles added touchdown passes from Jacobs to Tristan Weglarz and Cameron Houghton to cap off the scoring for the evening at 56-0.
Eureka (2-4, 1-3 NACC) struggled to find its rhythm against a tough Benedictine defense that tallied two sacks, three interceptions, and forced a fumble. The Red Devils finished with 139 total yards, including 58 on the ground and 81 through the air. Freshman quarterback Christian Noel (Prairieville, La./Ascension) led the offense with 71 passing yards and 28 rushing yards, while DeVayne Isom (Hawthorne, Nev./Mineral County) caught three passes for 20 yards.
Defensively, Chuck Weathersby (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) and Te'Lynn Jordan (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) each notched 11 tackles, while Beverson Noel (Lake Worth, Fla./Santaluces) added eight stops. Brandon Inaccus (Lake Worth, Fla./Santaluces) chipped in seven tackles, and Derrick Payton Jr. (West Seattle, Wash./O'dea) contributed three tackles, including one for loss.
