EUREKA, Ill. – The Red Devils struggled to keep pace on Saturday after an explosive start from the Lakeland offense, falling 40-12 on Senior Day. The Red Devils generated key plays on both sides of the ball, but the fast start by the Muskies ultimately sealed the outcome.
Lakeland opened with back-to-back touchdown drives, striking first on a 17-yard run and then on a 57-yard pass to make it 14-0 less than five minutes into the game. Eureka briefly seized momentum after a failed onside kick set up favorable field position, and Ethan Velazquez (Chicago, Ill./Prosser) connected with Braylon Boyer (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) for a 42-yard touchdown to pull within 14-6.
The Muskies answered with a 13-play scoring drive capped by a 2-yard rush to extend the margin to 20-6. Eureka then generated a fourth down stop and later a red zone takeaway when Beverlentz Bernard (Orlando, Fla./Evans) intercepted a pass in the end zone, but the Red Devils were unable to turn either into points.
Lakeland rebuilt control with a lengthy touchdown drive midway through the second quarter and tacked on another score just nine seconds before halftime for a 33-6 advantage heading into the break.
Boyer provided a spark to start the second half with a 75-yard kickoff return to the Lakeland 5. Eureka converted the short field when Rudolph Jones Jr. (Miami, Fla./Miami Edison) found Nathan Barrett (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) for a 7-yard touchdown on fourth down. Lakeland countered with a 15-play touchdown drive to reach 40-12 and maintained command the rest of the way. Jovon Gibson (Statesboro, Ga./Statesboro) and Chuck Weathersby (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) both came up with fumble recoveries for Eureka on mishandled snaps, but the Red Devils were repeatedly turned away by turnovers and stalled drives.
Velazquez finished 3-for-7 for 49 yards and a touchdown. Jones Jr. went 3-for-12 for 35 yards and a score. Boyer totaled 117 all-purpose yards, highlighted by his long kickoff return and 42-yard touchdown catch. Quinmarri Washington (Miami, Fla./Miramar) added a 24-yard reception, and Barrett recorded the Red Devils' second touchdown.
Eureka was held to 122 total yards, including 38 rushing. Defensively, Derrick Payton Jr. (West Seattle, Wash./O'dea) led all players with 14 tackles and two sacks. Christopher Walker (Miami, Fla./Carol City), Micah Gilcrest (Richmond, Va./Thomas Dale), Brian Burns (Philadelphia, Pa./Stroudsburg), Jeremiah Gray (Miami Gardens, Fla./Carol City), and Will Watkins (Flint, Mich./Davison) each reached double-digit tackles, while Bernard recorded an interception and Weathersby and Gibson each recovered fumbles.
Lakeland finished with 516 total yards, rushing for 234 and passing for 282. Hassan Rivers scored three touchdowns for the Muskies.
Prior to kickoff, Eureka honored its four seniors, Jack Butler (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park), Michael Bates (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West), Elston Lacy (Matteson, Ill./Rich Central), and Tanner Laesch (Lexington, Ill./Lexington), for their commitment to the program. Each was recognized with an on-field ceremony alongside family members in their final home appearance at McKinzie Field.
