Eureka Softball Drops Pair to Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Eureka softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Greenville on Monday, falling 11-3 in five innings in the opener before a 17-0 setback in the nightcap.

GAME 1: Greenville 11, Eureka 3 (5 innings)

Greenville struck early in the opener, scoring once in the first, twice in the second, and breaking the game open with six runs in the third to take a 9-0 lead. Eureka answered in the fourth, as Lexi Liptak (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) led off with a single and Ashlyn Voyles (Farmer City, Ill./Blue Ridge) followed with a base hit. Danika Apostolovich (Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) delivered a two-run double to put the Red Devils on the board, and Olivia Hurst (Ava, Ill./Freeburg Community) added an RBI single to cut the deficit to 9-3. Shaylun Christenberry (Brocton, Ill./Shiloh) kept Greenville off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, but the Panthers plated two runs in the fifth to secure an 11-3 run-rule victory.

Apostolovich finished 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored, while Hurst went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Liptak and Voyles accounted for Eureka's other two hits. Kaitlyn Robinson (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) took the loss in the circle, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits over 3.0 innings with two strikeouts. Christenberry tossed 1.1 innings in relief, surrendering two runs on two hits.

GAME 2: Greenville 17, Eureka 0 (5 innings)

Greenville took a 1-0 lead after the first inning in the second game, but Mallory Kohnen (New Athens, Ill./New Athens) settled in to keep the Panthers in check through the second as Eureka trailed by one. The Panthers broke the game open in the third with nine runs to extend the lead to 10-0 and added seven more in the fourth to cap the scoring in their 17-0 run-rule win.

Voyles, Christenberry, Kayleigh Zerrusen (Teutopolis, Ill./Teutopolis), and Ryleigh Jourdan (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) each recorded a hit for the Red Devils in the second game. Kohnen pitched 3.0 innings, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts, while Christenberry worked one inning in relief, giving up seven runs on five hits.
