Eureka Drops Senior Day Doubleheader to Webster

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka softball dropped both ends of a senior day doubleheader to Webster on Saturday, falling 3-2 in extra innings in the opener before an 8-0 loss in Game 2.

Prior to the games, the Red Devils honored seniors Danika Apostolovich (Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield), Ashlyn Voyles (Farmer City, Ill./Blue Ridge), and Lexi Liptak (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) for their contributions to the program.

GAME 1: Webster 3, Eureka 2 (8 innings)

In the opener, Webster broke a scoreless tie with a run in the third and added another in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. Eureka stranded seven runners over the first five innings before breaking through in the bottom of the sixth.

Tylar Whitaker (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Township) was hit by a pitch and Shaylun Christenberry (Brocton, Ill./Shiloh) followed with a single to put the tying run aboard. With two outs, Kayleigh Zerrusen (Teutopolis, Ill./Teutopolis) lifted a pop-up to second base that was dropped, allowing two runs to score as Eureka tied it at 2-2.

Webster threatened in the seventh, but Kaitlyn Robinson (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) worked out of the jam to keep the game even. Breannyn Dixon (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) doubled later in the inning to give Eureka a chance to walk it off, but the Red Devils could not capitalize.

In the eighth, Webster plated the inherited runner to regain the lead. Christenberry moved Eureka's inherited runner to third with a groundout in the bottom half, but the Red Devils were unable to bring her home in a 3-2 loss.

Liptak went 2 for 4 in Game 1, while Dixon and Whitaker each doubled. Robinson reached base twice and pitched all eight innings, allowing three unearned runs on four hits.

GAME 2: Webster 8, Eureka 0 (5 innings)

In Game 2, Webster jumped out quickly with four runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Gorloks added two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-0.

Eureka threatened in the fifth when Christenberry led off with a single, but the Red Devils were unable to score, ending the game via run rule.

Liptak finished 2 for 3 in the second game, and Christenberry recorded the only other hit for the Red Devils. Dixon reached base on a walk.

Christenberry started in the circle and allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning. Robinson entered in relief and went 4.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits.
